Elton Cunningham is a recurring character in the Netflix Limited Series of Godless. He is the sheriff of Olegrande, in the territory of New Mexico.
Biography[]
Elton is an elderly Sheriff who's seen enough bloodshed to last a lifetime and is tired of his occupation. He is a drinker and is quite cowardly, going so far as to let a gang of outlaws ride into his town and kill a U.S Marshal, without repercussions.
Season 1[]
Wisdom of the Horse[]
Sheriff Cunningham witnesses Frank Griffin and his gang ride into Olegrande. He hides in his office and drinks from a bottle of whiskey. Frank kills Marshal John Cook in the Olegrande saloon, taking the Marshal by surprise. Cunningham allows the gang of outlaws to leave without retaliation, fearing for his own safety and that of the town.
Fathers & Sons[]
Cunningham is there with Sheriff Bill McNue to look at the body of Marshal Cook, at the Olegrande undertakers. Cunningham is scolded by McNue for letting Frank and his outlaws ride into town and kill the Marshal. Sheriff Cunningham exclaims; "What was I supposed to do? You take a shot at Frank Griffin and his men, you best kill them all. Something the poor folks at Creede learned, to their sad experience."

Elton Cunningham is an elderly Sheriff with a portly stature and a worn-looking face. He wears a Sheriff badge pinned on his vest and wears a tan coloured cow boy hat.
